Some people will judge whether a dog is healthy by looking at its nose. A moist nose is healthy; a dry nose is diseased. Is this correct?
There are many reasons why a dog’s nose may be dry:
1. Licking subconsciously when getting up in the morning
Just like when we wake up, our mouth feels dry. Because when we are awake, we subconsciously lick our lower lips to keep them moist. You may feel a little dry when you wake up; this is normal.
2. The dog may be sick
Inflammation is the most common cause of dry noses in dogs. A normal dog’s nose is moist, but an infected dog’s nose is very dry, and it will lick its nose frequently. A normal dog’s eyes are very clean, but a sick dog will shed tears often and have two severe tear marks. At this time, timely treatment and medical attention are needed.
3. Be wary of dogs being infected with parvovirus
The dog has a dry nose and diarrhoea and refuses to eat (but is conscious). Diarrhoea is chocolate-coloured and foul-smelling, then white, bloodshot, and sticky. The dog is likely to be infected with parvovirus, and the dog should be taken to the hospital for examination and treatment in time.
4. Canine distemper
Unvaccinated dogs may suddenly develop symptoms such as dry nose, high fever, confusion, regression and biting. This is mainly caused by canine distemper.
